| Where to go for info after FTM yahoo group FAIL |
[Jan. 7th, 2010|12:42 am] |
Alright, so, I contacted the ftmphalloinfo yahoo group, and was denied. I answered the questionaire thoroughly and gave reasons as to why (despite being pre-T and pre-op due to lack of financial means) joining the group would be helpful for me.
I understand that the group is mainly for people who have either had the surgery or are just steps away from having it. But I figured that the group was also made for people who still want to gather info on the surgery.
Anyway (sorry for the rant), where else should I look for phallo surgery info? |

Has anyone participated in a NOLS trip or similar weeks-long backpacking trip post-transition? What were your experiences? Were you stealth, and did that pose a problem? I've been wanting to go, and I'm hoping that this is the year, but I'd like to get a heads up on any potential issues. |

Has anybody has any experience (or known somebody who has) with boxing or MMA fighting post-transition? I know that once you get into higher competition levels, T could potentially be an issue with drug tests. I'm more concerned about the ability to stay stealth in close contact with other dudes, between having my shirt off to fight and dealing with locker rooms afterwards, etc. I'm aware that a gym full of highly aggressive straight guys is not a safe place for a transman, but I think you could swing it. So I'd be grateful for any stories or experience.

I got my second shot of T yesterday, given to me by a nurse, and completely unlike my first one this one hurt like hell.
After I got it I asked the nurse what gauge needle he used, and he said a 21. Well no wonder it hurt! I asked him why he didn't use a smaller gauge, and he said it was impossible (!) to draw testosterone up into something like a 25.
Yeah, I know... someone call the pope, a lot of you guys must be performing miracles.
At the time I was shocked that someone thought that it was literally impossible to draw T up into a 25 instead of just taking a bit more time and so rattled by the experience that I didn't complain or correct him. Would it be out of line to say something to the next doctor I see? I'm not even sure I want to complain about that particular nurse so much as go "Hey, please make sure all your nurses know it is in fact possible to draw up T into needles that don't feel like they're stabbing you to death".
Are there really any citations or resources I need to print out to show to my doctor (or the next nurse that injects me) that this is totally feasible, or should it just be common sense that a complaint should set straight? |

I finally got a job! Yay! Even though it's at McDonald's, I'm pretty stoked about it. However...my name is legally changed and I'm on T enough to pass (however I keep getting the 'You are older than sixteen, right?' question) I still have the F attached to my birth certificate, which they need as proof of birth. I'm kinda leery now, since that incident in the states (I'm pretty sure) where a trans teen girl was harrassed when she applied to McDonald's, I'm overthinking everything. Should I just come out to the manager and cross my fingers? Hope that they figure it out on their own? The back of my mind keeps telling me not to sweat it, but I'm still nervous. Thanks for reading this and have a good day. |

| a well written account about just some of the frustrations with the uk trans community and the NHS |
[Jan. 6th, 2010|03:45 pm] |
i've been feeling a little down lately because i've somehow started to alienate myself from my past self. it's like now i can no longer identify with or appreciate my past because i used to be a girl, like it's too embarrassing/painful/nostalgic/shameful. so i was having a think about why this could have been, and then stumbled across this person's post to the queer youth uk forum.
http://www.queeryouth.org.uk/community/index.php?act=ST&f=8&t=21752
when i read it i was like OMG. thanks to this article i realised all this self-hatred started round about the time i had my first gender appointment! i was made to feel "not trans enough" and i felt like i had to prove to them that i wasn't a girl. when i read this, i was just like LOL SERIOUSLY.
"You will likely feel pressured to conform to Gender norms and find it difficult expressing interests you may have that are ordinarily reserved for the opposite sex. You will have to present yourself as a text-book Gender Dysphoria diagnosis. "
this is how they make you feel! this is is exactly how they made me feel! and i didn't realise how much it had affected me. so yeah, i really recommend reading it, if you're from the UK or not. it's a really accurate and well written experience with the NHS and i fully agree with everything that was said in it.

| Names and Standardized Tests |
[Jan. 5th, 2010|08:29 pm] |
I'm currently a junior in high school and beginning the process of preparing for college, and I'm also just starting the process of socially transitioning to another name. I recently signed up for the SAT and ACT tests, and found on the ACT registration website that when asked for a name, it stated that I should type the name I want my scores to be sent to colleges under.
This raised the broader question of what exactly I should do about my name with regards to college. I'm really clueless about the whole college prep thing anyway, so any advice would be great. Can I have my scores sent to colleges with a non-legal name, or even just an initial? I'm really hoping to be able to change my name legally before I go to college, but in the meantime I'm trying to keep the amount of stuff with my legal name to a minimum by signing with just my first initial when possible.
Any general advice or experience about college applications, the SAT/ACT, and other college-y name-related stuff would be really helpful! :) |

So, I have an interesting question as both a transgendered person and someone working in the travel and tourism industry. I'm sure most people heard about the attempted bombing of that flight from Amsterdam to Detroit on Christmas Day, and with that, most major airports are going to be implimenting those full body scanners. I know my airport will, because Vancouver is one of the three biggest airports in Canada. Now, there are alternatives to this full body scan which no doubt include being man-handled at the airport, so are any trans-folks more concerned about travelling because of this? Are you more or less petrified because of stealth status, does not being stealth make you less afraid of it? |

| Pain after hysto |
[Jan. 5th, 2010|10:25 pm] |
5 months ago i had a hysto key hole and it went well apart from a week later i got a flesh eating infection and was rushed back in with massive PV bleeding but thankfully with treatment i was ok although i was in hospital 10 days.
Now i have asked my doctor who did the op and she said that because of the bleed i have internal scaring and i may always get pain. But the pain i get some times feels like a stabbing pain and if i move wrong at times it can start it hurting for a hour or more.
Now for the question has anyone else had long term pain after hysto or am i just lucky! And if you did have long term pain did it get batter later after months even years or do you still have the pain.
I no i could take pain meds but to be honest apart from the ones they made me take in hospital i dont like taking pain meds i feel pains the bodys warnings to not over do things. I still have the pain meds from when i had my chest op and dident take them and from the ones they sent me home with hysto.
Do you think even though its 5 months i still have a chance it will heal more and not hurt?
Don't get me wrong i can live with this pain its annoying yes but my arthritis hurts more so im used to some pain anyways. |

| Please take/or share this survey on Transgender Specific Advocacy, Political, and/or Legal programs |
[Jan. 5th, 2010|12:51 pm] |
Building a Trans Movement: Overview of Trans Advocacy Organizations & Groups Across the US Survey of Transgender Specific Advocacy, Political, and/or Legal programs
I am collecting information about trans advocacy groups and projects from around the country for an info guide for a day-long institute at Creating Change about building up the trans movement and sharing resources, organizational structures, and developing leadership. I will be sharing the info with all who contribute regardless if you attend the workshop or not.
Survey Link: https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dDJfQXZacXVsbkJrc2RWVHR1Z3QxT1E6MA
We would love your assistance by taking this short survey about your Organization/Group or Project and would like to get surveys back by Jan 15, 2010. Also if you know of other groups around the country that fit the description please forward the link.
More information: At this year's Creating Change (http://www.thetaskforce.org/events/creating_change) in Dallas February 3– February 7, 2010 there will be an all-day institute on February 4th titled TRANS RIGHTS NOW: Building a Strong Transgender Movement
Description of the Institute (working description): A successful movement depends on dedicated and empowered activists working in strong organizations at all levels, from the local to the national. The trans/allied movement needs people working in rural and urban areas, in formal organizations and in informal groups -- we need the support of everyone from political organizations in Boston to support groups in rural Kansas to Facebook groups.
As part of this institute we would like to give the participants information about Transgender led state wide or city advocacy groups/organizations, or transgender specific projects/programs of LGBT advocacy organizations. The purpose of this information will be to inform the section of the institute titled "Organizational Development" which we hope will build on, encourage, and empower transgender activists to build power in their local states and communities.
This information will also help us build a broader picture of the types of transgender advocacy happening around the country. I also encourage folks to forward this survey to other transgender activists that are doing advocacy work at whatever level.
We also hope you will be attending Creating Change and will want to take part in this exciting Institute. If you have any questions about this survey please email gscott@masstpc.org and if you have questions about Creating Change please contact creatingchange@thetaskforce.org.
Thank you in advance for taking the time to take this survey and I will provide what ever materials come out of this to all those who take this survey along with those who attend this institute |

| Deciding who to have surgery with |
[Jan. 5th, 2010|12:29 pm] |
Within the next few months my doctor will be happy to refer me for top surgery. I live in the UK and I'm seeing a NHS doctor but I plan to have surgery privately. So I need to know who I want to be referred to and already be up on their proceder (my doctor isn't the most usful chap in the world so I get along better when I'm well informed and can just tell him what to do). This isn't a new thing I've been thinking about, I've been doing my research for years and still haven't even worked out how to decide. I've look at the result pictures, I've emailed the surgeons and I've read other guys' experiences and I've got my choices down to three. It's starting to stress me out because this is such an important decision in my life.
I'll be having double incision and I have £6k (just over $9500) but if need be I can find a bit more cash. In the UK, Davies is the only surgeon I'm considering, the pros are he's pretty good and going to London is a much smaller trip than going to the states. But he just isn't the best and I'm scared that if my results aren't ideal I'll regret not having gone to the states. Since I was like 14 everyone has being going on about Brownstein, I think I'd feel in good hands going to him because he's been giving good results consistently for a long time. Then there's Medalie who I'm thinking is more of an outside choice for me now, he's cheaper, his results seem to be just as good as Brownstein but he's not being producing good results for as long. But going to the US does scare me a bit, I'm used to knowing the NHS is there to look after me no matter what happens and a flight so far after surgery might not be too fun.
I know nobody can decide for me but I'd like to hear other people's opinions, hopefully it'll help clarify things for me. How did you decide? Any general tips? Anyone fly right after surgery- how was it? Anyone went from the UK to the US for surgery- what was it like? |

| Pope urges lifestyle changes to save environment |
[Jan. 3rd, 2010|03:39 pm] |
VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict used his traditional New Year address on Friday to call on people to change their lifestyles to save the planet, saying environmental responsibility was essential for global peace. Recalling that world leaders had gathered in Copenhagen last month for the U.N. climate conference, the pope said action at a personal and community level was just as important to safeguard the environment.
"Nevertheless, in this moment, I would like to underline the importance of the choices of individuals, families and local administrations in preserving the environment," the Pope told the thousands of faithful gathered in St. Peter's Square.
"An objective shared by all, an indispensable condition for peace, is that of overseeing the earth's natural resources with justice and wisdom."

There is a thread on a site dedicated to lesbians posting pictures of people from this community. Just wanted to give you the link incase you have been posted.
All the pictures have been deleted. Also, before you click the thread please know that there are awful things that have been said. The thread contains a bunch of transphobic slurs that might be triggering to some people.

| Does this seem right to you? |
[Jan. 3rd, 2010|01:38 pm] |
I had a phone consultation with Dr. Charles Garramone in November, 2009 for a Double Incision Reduction with Free Nipple Grafts. Unfortunately, he said I will probably need one major additional surgery besides the DI. I spoke with Garramone on the telephone and he looked at photos of my chest. And because I am a big guy (just under 300 lbs) he said I will need to have two surgeries with him. I have major fat deposits under my arms on either side of my chest. He said that he does not extend the incision too far under either arm pit for aesthetic reasons. He said that what I will be left with is not exactly dog ears but fat.

Obama Makes History, Appoints Trans Woman
"Aerospace and defense veteran Amanda Simpson has been appointed to the Department of Commerce as a senior technical adviser.
Simpson, who is transgender, will be working in the Bureau of Industry and Security.
"I'm truly honored to have received this appointment and am eager and excited about this opportunity that is before me," she said in a press release by the National Center for Transgender Equality, an organization for which she has served on the board of directors. "And at the same time, as one of the first transgender presidential appointees to the federal government, I hope that I will soon be one of hundreds, and that this appointment opens future opportunities for many others."
Simpson was most recently the Deputy Director in Advanced Technology Development at Raytheon Missile Systems in Tucson, Arizona. A flight instructor and test pilot, Simpson also holds degrees in physics, engineering, and business administration. |
